Degenerative Joint Disease/Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a disease of the joints. Also know as degenerative joint disease or Spondylosis, it is the most common form of arthritis in the spine. Osteoarthritis is caused by the breakdown of cartilage.  Cartilage allows bone to glide over one another and acts a cushion during movement. In osteoarthritis, the cartilage wears away and breakdown causing the bones under the cartilage to rub together, causing pain, swelling, and loss of motion in the joint. Arthritis can have increased prevalence due to age, gender – female, hereditary conditions, joint injury, obesity, and diseases that affect the structure and function of cartilage.
