Piriformis Syndrome
The piriformis muscle is a small muscle in the buttock region that runs horizontally between the hip and the sacrum. It lies in close relationship to the sciatic nerve. It usually runs over top the sciatic nerve but sometimes the sciatic nerve runs over the piriformis or the sciatic nerve can pierce the piriformis muscle. At times the piriformis muscle can irritate the sciatic nerve giving the symptoms of leg pain which needs to be distinguished from other causes of leg pain such as herniated disks.
